Limit switches are used for a number of applications.

• Mechanical limit switches link a mechanical position with an electrical signal.  Your electric garage door opener has a mechanical limit switch at both the open and closed position to stop the motor.
• Electrical limit switches may terminate the connection if a certain condition is met, such as detection of excess voltage.
• Speed-sensing limit switches use centrifugal force to open the connection.  After a pre-set rotation rate is met, centrifugal force drives the contacts apart, breaking the circuit.
• Circuit breakers are a kind of electro-mechanical limit switch.  The switch physically moves positions when an excess voltage condition is detected.
• Temperature limit switches disconnect the circuit if a preset temperature is exceeded.
